Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)

Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) is a UK-based program for fitness instructors and personal trainers. It recognises industry-based qualifications, provides public liability insurance, and requires members to adhere to an industry-specific code of practice.

In 2020, it was defunct and its members were transferred to CIMSPA. What does this mean for fitness professionals?

What is CIMSPA

CIMSPA, the professional body in the UK for health and fitness professionals is become an avon rep industry-recognized body that regulates trainers. Its purpose is to safeguard the public's interest in using the services of fitness professionals by ensuring that they have all the relevant expertise, technical know-how training, and insurance. It is also responsible to develop and maintain standards of excellence for the fitness industry.

The organization combines input from many stakeholders that include employers deployers, NGBs, awarding organisations, higher educational institutions, training providers, and practitioners to help develop the sector and assist its staff and professionals. This is achieved through working with the industry to better understand and recognize the professional needs and barriers to the ability of the sector to meet these needs.

As part of this mission, CIMSPA offers the framework for the quality assurance system in fitness professionals through an endorsement process. This process recognizes the content and quality of formal qualifications and training courses. CIMSPA will usually endorse the regulated (Ofqual) qualifications that are accredited by an accredited awarding organisation such as Focus Awards or Active IQ, as well as certain kinds of continuing professional development (CPD) training.

CIMSPA membership also confers a certain degree of recognition in the industry. It enables members to access specialist insurance coverage that includes public liability coverage of up to PS10 million and personal accident coverage. Members can also keep a record of their professional development. They can take online courses for free and have access to a career site that updates frequently with new job openings.

The body is also a member of the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals (ICREPs), which means that its members are able to utilize their registration to work abroad, as long as they have the relevant qualification. Are REPs qualifications recognized internationally?

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) was a public, reps independent register that was operated by a membership program. It was designed to protect the public and to give employers and fitness professionals the assurance they needed that an individual held qualifications that were recognised and endorsed and in line with National Occupational Standards.

REPs is a UK-based registry, and as such only covers the UK fitness industry. Having REPs was not a requirement under the law, however it did give clients confidence that the fitness professional they worked with was fully qualified and operating within the highest standards of professionalism.

In 2020, REPs will be sold to UK Coaching. An agreement with CIMSPA has been reached to combine the REPs Directory with the CIMSPA directory. Fitness professionals can continue to join both REPs AND CIMSPA. However renewal of REPs membership will no longer be possible.

While REPs no longer operates in the UK, they have global reach through ICREPs which connects international registers and fitness professionals. If you are a REPs registered personal trainer in the UK and you are a REPs registered personal trainer, you can work as a personal training in other ICREPs countries such as Australia. However, it is important to remember that REPs isn't an assurance of employment or insurance coverage for fitness professionals. This is because REPs is not a governing body, it is an industry association that is essentially a voluntary to join. International certification bodies with top international standing like ACSM, NSCA, ISSA, NASM, and ACE are not affiliated shop with my rep REPs and, therefore, will never promise any employment or insurance coverage to their fitness professionals.

Having said that REPs is committed making sure that their members are current with the constantly changing trends in the fitness industry. This is the reason REPs has a REPs points system which requires members to earn a the required number of REPs points every year in order to maintain their REPs status. These REPs points are determined by their level of education and the number of CPD courses they have attended.
