Best Over the Ear Headphones

Wireless headphones let you listen to music or podcasts anywhere, without the necessity of running an audio wire to your device. They are an excellent choice for public transport, at work or at home.

Soundcore Life Q30

These earphones are an important upgrade over the Soundcore Life 2 of late-2018. They are more attractive, feel more durable, and have a more polished appearance. The hinges are stronger and the soft leather ear cups are slightly larger. They're still made of plastic, but they are more polished. You can switch the 3.5mm cord with a high quality USB-C cable and use them with mobile Hi-Res and stationary Hi-Fi players. They also come with two built-in mics that worked well during our tests with FaceTime, Skype and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app has a huge selection of EQ presets, which can be customized and saved to allow you to listen to music and podcasts in the way you prefer. The Soundcore app is easy to use and makes these headphones stand out.

When ANC is on, the Q30's 40mm drivers effectively block out most of the ambient noise, and provide an extremely pleasant listening experience. The Q30's sound signature is natural, but it's a bit harsh on treble. Some might be disappointed by the bass response (we got better results using the Bass Booster equalizer). However, you can easily rectify this using the Soundcore app, since there's an equalizer with 8 bands to allow you to tweak.

The left earcup features a power button as well as a pairing button and a USB-C charging port. The right earcup has play/pause and the volume up and down buttons. Double-clicking these buttons lets you skip tracks or repeat the previous one. You can also make use of voice commands to instruct them to switch modes or set alarms. The right earcup can be covered with your hand to activate ambient mode so that you can be aware of what is happening around you, without removing the headphones.

The battery life on these headphones is excellent and the battery life is also excellent. The Q30 lasts for an hour longer in our tests when ANC was on than its competitors. This leaves plenty of time to prepare for a long flight or working for a long time. They can be charged quickly by using the USB-C cable that comes with them and you'll get warnings when they're about to run empty.

Focal's Bathys Wireless are a set of high-quality headphones for over-ear use that feature active noise cancellation and Bluetooth playback. These headphones are made to be premium, high-end headphones that can be used at home or while on the move. They're slightly more expensive than similar headphones but their superior sound quality is their main selling feature.

The Focal Bathys are packaged in a small, slim and attractive white fabric-finished retail box that includes everything you need inside. There's a fold-flat headphone wireless bluetooth carry case, wireless in Headphones USB-C-to-USB-C cable, 1.2mm SE cable and an audio adapter.

The 600mAh battery will last for a whole day of listening to music casually. They also include an audio input so that you can use wired. When they're wirelessly connected, they're connected via bluetooth headfones and you'll be able control their functions using an app (now known as Focal and Naim, probably in the same vein as their English Naim brand's products for audio that are network-aware) or by pressing the button that's located on the left earcup that scrolls between ANC profiles like'soft','silent 'transparent' and 'full'.

Using the app allows you to change various settings like the brightness of the LED and EQ presets, including a "music profile' that is more neutral and brighter than the others and also their battery life. You can also select the ANC mode and level and setting an 'acoustic settings setting to alter the sensitivity to simulate the sound of the headphones in a different room.

The Focal Bathys have a bass-rich sound profile that delivers extra punch and warmth to your favourite tracks. In the end, instruments and vocals are pushed back into the mix, and can sound dull, while other details such as cymbals sound slightly less prominent than you might expect on some other headphones. The headphones are also less effective at active noise cancellation, compared to other over-ears that have higher-end technology, such as the Sony WH1000XM5 and Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony headphones are well-known for their high-end quality and the WH1000XM5 is no exception. It sits at the upper portion of the headphones for over-ear, and is slipping into the luxury lifestyle area where the likes of Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc hang out. This means the XM5s have a premium price tag, but when you can afford it, there are more superior wireless bluetooth headphone over-ear headphones on the market.

The XM5s are loaded with features that simplify the lives of listeners and, in a few instances, automate tasks they'd otherwise have to handle manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near-high resolution) is also included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This allows streaming of high-quality audio at rates that are higher than traditional Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone for making calls hands-free.

The XM5 headphones are no different than the previous generation WH headphones in regards to noise cancellation. They're among the best-performing cans for cutting out constant drones heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s are great at their job isolating listeners from the traffic noises of busy streets and airports, too.

The sound quality is also excellent. The XM5s aren't as detailed in the low frequencies as the XM4, but there's a greater sense of clarity and transparency as well. The bass on Rage Against The Machine’s Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys power and clarity without affecting the rest of the music. The XM5s are also able to deliver precise and tight bass notes on Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is excellent with up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is in use and 40 hours if it's off. This is more than enough for a weekend trip or a few days of heavy use.

The only drawback is that the XM5s lack any water resistance or dust resistance protection. In fact, Sony recommends that you not sweat on them or take them out in the rain. This may not be a big deal for everyone else however, for those who spend a lot of time in the gym or live in a humid region, it could be a major problem.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones over-ear with Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They feature 40mm dynamic drivers designed by Apple with an audio profile that is neutral and concentrates on the highs and mids while not going too loud on either end of the spectrum. They are perfect for movies and music. They also have superior fidelity when compared to other headphones.

The headphones are light in build that feels comfortable on the head. The ear cups are constructed of memory foam and covered with weaved fabric. They are comfortable to wear without pressing on the sides of the face. The ear cups can be tilted and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges offer a firm, but not too strong clamping force that makes sure the earcups remain in place throughout listening sessions.

Toggle noise cancelling mode by pressing a small button on the top of the right earcup. You can also use the jog dial that is a push-button like the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can twist it for volume control and press it once three, twice, or times to playback the controls. Pressing and holding the button invokes Siri. The buttons are easy to use and well-placed however, I would like to have a power button that would turn off the headphones when they are not in use. The headphones go into standby mode when removed from your ears or when they are put in their case. They will come back into use when you place them on your head.

Another feature that is quite cool is spatial audio, which utilizes the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine the direction you're going, and then repositions sound to make it seem like they're coming from these locations. This creates a cinema-like experience when watching movies and videos recorded in Dolby Atmos, 5.1 or 7.1. Only iOS devices are able to listen to spatial audio.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd be a bit ripped off entering an Apple Store and spending $549 on them if I knew they'd be outdone in a year by the second-generation model. The AirPods Pro have more advanced features and a better battery life, making it hard to justify the extra cost for the majority of people.
