Best Over the Ear Headphones

They have a natural sound signature that is a bit on the treble end, which some might be unable to reproduce bass (we have had better results using the Bass Booster Equalizer preset). This can be fixed easily with the Soundcore App, which includes an eight-band Equalizer.

The left earcup features an power button as well as a pairing button and a USB-C charging port. The right ear cup features play/pause, and volume up/down buttons. Double-clicking these controls lets you to skip tracks or replay previous ones. They also have an option to speak to them that allows you to request to switch the mode or set an alarm. The right earcup can also be covered by your hand to activate ambient mode, to allow you to hear what's happening around you, without removing the headphones.

The Q30 headphones offer a long battery life. In our tests with ANC enabled the Q30 was able to last for nearly an hour longer than its competitors. You'll also get an alert when your battery is nearing empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless are a set of powerful over-ear headphones that offer both active noise cancellation and Bluetooth playback. They're designed to be an elite, high-end headphone that are great for listening to podcasts and music on the go but also are a great choice for audiophile home use as well. The headphones are a little more expensive than other headphones, but their outstanding sound quality is what makes them stand out.

The Focal Bathys are packed in a small, attractive white box with a fabric finish. It includes all the accessories that you'll require. The package also includes a fold-flat carrying case for the headphones, a USB-C to USB C cable, 1.2mmSE cable and an audio converter.

They're powered by a good 600mAh battery that can get you through a full day of casual listening and have an audio input for wired use. When they're wirelessly connected, they're connected via Bluetooth and you'll be able control their functions using an app (now named Focal & Naim which is probably in the same line as their English Naim brand's network-aware audio products) or by pressing the dedicated button located on the left earcup that allows you to switch between ANC profiles like'silent','soft' 'transparent' and full.

The app allows you to modify various settings, such as the brightness of the LEDs, the EQ presets (including a'music' profile which is more neutral and brighter than the other profiles) and the battery life. You can also select the ANC mode and level and select an 'acoustic environment that adjusts the sensitivity to mimic the sound of the headphones in a different room.

The Focal Bathys have bass-rich, rich sound profiles that adds more punch and warmth to your favorite tracks. In the end, instruments and vocals are pushed back into the mix, and can sound veiled while other details such as cymbals sound not as prominent as you'd expect on other headphones. They're not as efficient in active noise cancellation when contrasted with other headphones that have higher-end technology like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony has a fine reputation for its headphones, and the WH-1000XM5 is no exception. It is at the top of the mainstream over ear headphone market and is in the 'luxury' lifestyle area where brands like Apple, Montblanc, Bang & Olufsen and Montblanc are located. The XM5s have a premium cost, but when you can afford it, there are few better wireless over-ear headphones available.

The XM5s are loaded with features to help listeners and, in a few instances, automate tasks that they'd otherwise have to handle manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to near hi-res) is also included as well as support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This lets high-quality audio be streamed with bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone for making calls hands-free.

The XM5 headphones aren't any different from the previous generation headphones from WH, in terms of noise cancellation. They're among the most efficient headphones to block out the continuous drones that can be heard in underground and train carriages. The XM5s also excel in separating the listener from the hum of airports and busy streets.

The sound quality is also great. The XM5s don't have as high a resolution in the low frequency range as the XM4, but they do have a greater sense clarity and a greater sense of openness. The bass on Rage Against The Machine's Bullet in the Head shows off the Sonys' power and definition without affecting the rest of the music. The XM5s are also able to produce precise and precise bass notes in Massive Attack's Angel.

Battery life is great and can last up to 30 hours listening time when ANC is in use and 40 hours if off. This is enough to last a weekend getaway or several days' heavy use.

The only real drawback here is that the XM5s don't have any dust or water resistance protection. Sony actually advises against sweating into the XM5s or taking them out in the rain. This may not be a major issue for the majority of people however, for those who spend long hours in the gym or live in a rainy area this could be a significant issue.

Apple AirPods Max

The Apple AirPods Max are a pair of wireless headphones that fit over the ear equipped with Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They have 40mm dynamic drivers that are designed by Apple and have a neutral audio profiles that is focused on the mids and highs while not going too loud on either end of the spectrum. This makes them perfect for both music and movies. They also have superior fidelity compared to most rival headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made of memory foam and covered with woven fabric, and they sit comfortably on the ears without placing pressure on the sides of the face. The ear cups can be flipped and rotated to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges feature a solid but not overly robust clamping force that makes sure that the ear cups stay in place throughout listening sessions.

A small button located on the top of the right ear cup lets you toggle noise cancelling modes. It also has the jog dial that is a push-button like the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it to control the volume and press it once, twice, or three times for playback controls. Siri can be activated by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are well-placed and easy to use, but I would have liked an option to switch off the headphones when not in use. The headphones automatically go into standby mode when removed from your ears or put in their case, and they only wake up when you place them on your head again.

Another cool feature is spatial audio, which uses the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine the direction you're going, and then repositions the sound to create the illusion that they're coming from these locations. This gives you a theater-like experience with videos and movies that were recorded in Dolby Atmos, Head Phones 5.1 or 7.1. The only downside is that spatial audio requires an iOS device to use it, and you won't be able to enjoy it with other devices.

The AirPods Max are a decent pair of headphones, but I'd feel a bit ripped off going into an Apple Store and spending $549 on them if I knew they'd be outdone in a year by the new model. AirPods Pro are more expensive and have more battery life and are equipped with the latest features.
