The sash is the internal frame that is vertically moved either up or down in windows that are open. This article will show you how to perform easy repairs to your sash.

Weather Stripping

Wood window sashes give the classic look to your home and, when properly maintained, can last for many years. However, they may become damaged or deteriorate over time because of exposure to the elements and wear and wear and tear. Weather stripping is the most important aspect to consider when you are repairing windows that have sash. It is located on both the frame and the sash. It is crucial to have the tools needed before you start. Begin by marking the location of the hinge channel on the frame using a pencil (Photo 1). This will allow you to get the channel back on place correctly when you're finished. Then, remove the sash, and then remove the hardware including the beads that separate (Photo 2) and the chains or cords that hold it in place. A hot gun with nozzle shield and medium setting will soften any hardened glue. Remove the old sash, and store it in an labelled bag.

Sash Weights

A new sash cord will give you the ability to move the sash up and down and will keep it in its position when it is opened.

To replace sash cords, the first step is to remove the access panels from the jambs. They are usually nailed or screwed in and must be removed or repositioned. You could use a hammer and chisel for removing them, but it's always better to lay down dust sheets before beginning any work.

After the access panel has been removed, you can begin working on the sash. Make the small parting beads (also known as "tie rails") out of their grooves using a chisel or flat bar. It is essential to take your time because they are usually placed in a wedge or nail. If the sash is still in place, remove the mortise and tenon joints with a hammer and pin punch or screwdriver, then remove the wood pegs on each piece. The sash should be able move freely, however it may require some lubrication in order to feel less stiff.

They are not expensive and simple to install if you purchase them at architectural salvage stores.
